Pre-K at Rye Street School

Pre-K for four-year-olds, inside a Salina school

A pre-K day

A day in the pre-K room

The order stays the same from day to day, so children know what comes next.

  1. 8:15

    Step 1: Arrival

A teacher greets each child at the classroom door. Children hang up their coats, find their hook and choose a first activity while families say goodbye.

  2. 8:45

    Step 2: Circle time

Everyone sits on the rug for a hello song, the weather and a story. A few children are helpers each day, and everyone gets a turn.

  3. 9:15

    Step 3: Choice time

Blocks, the play kitchen, the easel, puzzles and the book corner. A teacher sits down with a few children at a time for a game with letters, numbers or shapes, and then moves on to the next.

  4. 10:30

Step 4: Snack and the yard

A snack at the long table, then outdoors on the school's playground and garden whatever the season, with boots and coats when it asks for them.

  5. 11:45

    Step 5: Lunch and rest

Children on the morning schedule go home at the start of lunch. The others eat at the long table with their teachers, then rest on mats with a book.

  6. 1:15

    Step 6: Afternoon, then home

Art, music, the library and the gym with the school's own teachers, a last story, and pickup at the door.

Questions families ask

How does a tour work?

Book online or call the school office. You walk through the pre-K room and the rest of the school on a weekday morning, while the day is under way, and there is time for questions. Children are welcome to come along.

What sets tuition?

The schedule you choose: mornings, the school day or three days a week. We go through the figures on a tour and send them with the enrollment forms. A family that uses the state's pre-K program has tuition arranged differently, and we explain how.

What rules does the pre-K run under?

Rye Street Pre-K is part of Rye Street School, which runs it under state rule. Ask us at a tour which rules apply to the school.

What happens when my child is ill?

A child stays home with a fever, vomiting or a contagious illness and comes back after a full day without symptoms. If a child becomes unwell at school we call you to come and keep them with a teacher until you arrive.

How do you handle a hard day?

Every child has one now and then. A teacher stays close, helps the child say what is wrong and offers a quiet spot in the room with a book. We tell you about it at pickup, so you don't have to wonder.

How does the state pre-K program work with Rye Street?

Rye Street Pre-K takes part in the state's pre-K program. Ask us how it works with our tuition. We go through it on a tour and again when you apply, and the school office helps with the state's form.
