Frequently asked questions
Who is pre-K for, and what are the hours?
Rye Street Pre-K is for children who are four years old by the start of the school year. Mornings run from 8:15 to 11:45 a.m. and the school day from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., Monday to Friday. A three-day school-day schedule is also offered.
How does a tour work?
Book online or call the school office. You walk through the pre-K room and the rest of the school on a weekday morning, while the day is under way, and there is time for questions. Children are welcome to come along.
What sets tuition?
The schedule you choose: mornings, the school day or three days a week. We go through the figures on a tour and send them with the enrollment forms. A family that uses the state's pre-K program has tuition arranged differently, and we explain how.
How is a place held, and how does the waitlist work?
A place is held when the school office has your enrollment forms and the first month's payment, and that payment goes toward tuition. When a schedule is full we keep a waitlist and write to families in the order they joined as places open.
What rules does the pre-K run under?
Rye Street Pre-K is part of Rye Street School, which runs it under state rule. Ask us at a tour which rules apply to the school.
What happens when my child is ill?
A child stays home with a fever, vomiting or a contagious illness and comes back after a full day without symptoms. If a child becomes unwell at school we call you to come and keep them with a teacher until you arrive.
What should my child bring?
A labeled change of clothes, closed-toe shoes, a coat or rain gear for the weather and a water bottle. Children on the school day also bring a lunch from home. We ask families not to send nuts.
How do you handle toilet learning?
Children use the toilet on their own for the school day. If an accident happens, a teacher helps quietly and sends the wet clothes home in a bag. If your child is still learning, tell us at the tour and we'll talk about how we would work together.
How do you handle a hard day?
Every child has one now and then. A teacher stays close, helps the child say what is wrong and offers a quiet spot in the room with a book. We tell you about it at pickup, so you don't have to wonder.
How does the state pre-K program work with Rye Street?
Rye Street Pre-K takes part in the state's pre-K program. Ask us how it works with our tuition. We go through it on a tour and again when you apply, and the school office helps with the state's form.
